Essence of Deliciousness

“Umami” was first identified by Japanese scientist Dr Kikunae Ikeda in 1908. While enjoying a bowl of kelp broth called kombu dashi, he noticed that the savoury flavour was distinct from the four basic tastes of sweet, sour, bitter, and salty. He named this different taste “umami,” which means “essence of deliciousness” in Japanese.

At Umami Snacks, we strive to achieve this “essence of deliciousness.”

As a family-owned business, the recipes have been handed down from generation to generation. Even preceding 1908, “Umami” was always known amongst the Cape Malay Community, maybe not as Umami, but it was there.

Today Umami Snacks is owned and run by Rosina Fakier. In collaboration with her Mother in Law, Haj Farieda Fakier, they have created a product that truly reflects and combines the essence of Umami, family, and good food. Rosina and Haj Farieda believes that: Only if it is good enough for themselves, then it is good enough for their clients.  So go ahead, order with confidence; you will not be disappointed.
